Culture and Education

Interior from Södertörn UniversityThe School of Culture and Education includes the following subjects: English, Aesthetics, Philosophy, Gender Studies, Art History, Comparative Literature, Media and Communication Studies, Education, Rhetoric and Swedish, as well as Teacher Education and the Centre for Studies in Practical Knowledge.

Teachers and researchers at the school largely work across subject boundaries, and Teacher Education involves teachers from a number of subjects at the school and from other academic schools at the university.

Truth, Construction and Subjectivity: Contemporary Issues in the Theory of Scientific Knowledge, 7.5 credits

5 November - 20 December 2018

The course shows how the scholarly ideal of knowledge and truth leads to critical questions about its own conditions. The course presents and discusses some of the central standpoints within the contemporary debate: phenomenology, hermeneutics, genealogy and discourse analysis, the sociology of knowledge, deconstruction, feminist and postcolonial criticism.The primary aim of the course is to provide students with a specialised introduction to some important authors and standpoints in the field of critical theory. The course focuses on the opposition between relativism and objectivism, and between constructivism and anticonstructivism.

The course is mainly focused on issues relevant to social science, history, and the humanities, but it also touches on the relationship between the human and the natural sciences. It is not primarily a course that teaches scientific methods, instead its purpose is to provide an advanced introduction to how scholarly practices have been theoretically and critically understood and discussed up to the present day. By making the students acquainted with central theoretical positions based on the reading of original texts it gives the ability to take a stand in central debates on scientific theory.

The course aims at discussing the concept of reflection and its place within the aesthetic-philosophical discourse and history. We discuss the understanding of reflection as self-knowledge and self-search and its transformation into a concept in poetry and aesthetics, including German Idealism, phenomenology, postmodernism and feminism. At the same time, a historical development is drawn in which the concept of reflection is transformed from being a matter of self-knowledge and self-search to becoming a question of self-affection and alterity / heterotopy.

Metod och forskningspraktik inom det konstvetenskapliga fältet, 7,5 hp

13-14 november samt 6-7 december 

Kursen syftar till att ge deltagarna en breddad och fördjupad kunskap om centrala metodologiska perspektiv inom det konstvetenskapliga fältet. De olika metodernas historiska ursprung, deras inbördes relationer och funktioner analyseras, liksom deras kopplingar till en allmän vetenskaplig metodik.

Kursen uppmärksammar vidare distinktionen mellan metod och teori och hur detta tar sig uttryck i den konstvetenskapliga forskningspraktiken. Kursdeltagarna fördjupar också förmågan att identifiera och kritiskt analysera metodologiska frågor och problem och att självständigt kunna värdera relevanta tillämpningar.

InterGender Queer Studies at the End of the World

10-12 December 2018

Three days intensive workshops with 10 participants and one international or national guest professor/senior researcher. The workshop is centered on close engagement with both the teacher’s research and the participants’ PhD projects. On request InterGender issues a certificate of 7,5 ECTS for active participation. For participants who also write an essay, evaluated as passed, InterGender issues a certificate of 15 ECTS (including 7,5 ECTS for active participation).
