Selection: On the basis of previous university credits. Between 30 and 285 credits may be taken into account.

Journalism and International Conflicts

Course 15 credits

The main focus of the course is to mediate knowledge and research about the professional role of the journalist in areas of social conflict, as well as the peace and development practices of the mass media and journalists.
The course is conducted in the form of lectures, seminars and both individual and group assignments. Assessment is based on oral and written assignments.

Course design

Teaching is through lectures, seminars, group work and individual assignments.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • understand the media's role in international conflicts
  • understand journalism's specific problems in relation to international conflicts.
Skills and abilities
  • make critical assessments of sources used in journalism during international conflicts
  • conduct independent journalistic research about international crises and conflicts.
Judgement and approach
  • reflect on ethical issues in journalism in relation to international crises and conflicts
  • reflect on power resources and the use of power in international crises and conflicts.

Examination

Participation in seminars, oral and written assignments as well as a written take-home examination.

Occasional missed seminars or other compulsory exercises may, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated with written assignments.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
