Sweden on Stage: Contemporary Drama and Performance

Course 7,5 credits

The aim of this course is to introduce the student to contemporary Swedish drama and Swedish theatre. This includes plays for young adults, children and grown-ups. The plays and performances studied are put in a historical and political context. One focus in the course is how the family is portrayed from a child’s perspective. Plays by different authors, primarily from the 1980s to the present day, are studied.

Course design

The course consists of seminars and lectures.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • describe a variety of genres in Swedish contemporary drama
  • analyse different types of dramatic narrative in contemporary Swedish drama and theatre
  • describe the historical and political contexts of Swedish contemporary drama
  • analyse and interpret a dramatic text and communicate this orally and in writing in an academic context

Examination

The course is examined through a take-home exam and active participation in seminars.

The course has a mandatory attendance of 80% of the seminars. A student may compensate for a single missed seminar via written assignments.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
