Theories of International Relations

Course 7,5 credits

This course is about the theory, practice and dynamics of International Relations. The core theoretical perspectives in International Relations, and their proponents, are discussed. The course also provides an opportunity for specialisation within International Relations, such as conflict resolution, globalisation, international cooperation, international administration and bureaucracy, and foreign policy decision-making. The course is a useful theoretical preparation for writing a C-level essay within the field of International Relations.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is able to:
· orally and in writing demonstrate familiarity with different theories about international relations and their empirical applicability
· orally and in writing demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics and processes of international relations and the impact of different factors
· orally and in writing relate theoretical concerns to different case studies and fields of specialisation within the study of international relations
· orally and in writing formulate theoretically and empirically relevant research questions within the study of international relations.

Examination

Written assignments, mandatory seminars, and a final essay.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
