Introduction to Academic Writing in English

Course 15 credits

This course is for students who plan to write a Bachelor's or Master's dissertation in their main field of study. The course deals with the basics of academic writing, along with the analysis of different types of texts with regard to argumentation and rhetorical strategies. Students learn basic skills in academic writing through written assignments, such as essays, letters of application, and CV.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars. All teaching and course literature is in English.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student will be able to:
• demonstrate basic skills in academic writing in English
• explain and apply rhetorical strategies in text construction
• analyse English-language academic texts
• identify and produce different types of English-language academic texts
• write formal texts in English with a high degree of grammatical accuracy
• make use of relevant sources
• critically analyse English-language texts regarding language, structure and argument
• constructively critique his or her own writing

Examination

Obligatory attendance and active participation.
Continuous assessment of written assignments.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
