English A

Course 30 credits

In the A course, like in all our courses, you acquire both practical and theoretical knowledge. You learn how to discuss topics relevant to Anglophone cultures and societies, analyze contemporary English-language novels, and practice academic writing. Studying English helps you improve your oral and written proficiency. You also study language analysis, text analysis, grammar, as well as English-language literatures and cultures.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars. Most teaching is conducted in English in order to develop oral and written proficiency. Course literature is also mainly in English.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • describe cultural and social conditions in the modern English-speaking world
  • display an understanding of English as an academic discipline, and questions that are central to the various orientations within the study of English, including English in a global context
  • define and apply linguistic concepts and argumentation
  • provide a general explanation of the structure of English
  • provide example of fundamental tools and concepts for the analysis of modern texts and discourses.
Competence and ability

  • use fundamental grammatical concepts
  • apply fundamental tools and concepts in the analysis of different genres of literary texts
  • orally communicate, discuss and convey knowledge of English
  • write academic texts with a clear structure and formal style.
Evaluation and attitude

  • relate to examples of how social, economic and political factors influence and are influenced by linguistic and cultural variations.

Isolated instances of missed seminars or lectures can be compensated for via written assignments which must be submitted to the course examiner no later than three (3) weeks after grade registration.

If a student has missed more than 20 % of the seminars or/and lectures on a course module the student can only compensate this by, on another occasion, attending the number of seminars and/or lectures required to reach a minimum level of 80 % overall attendance.

At least 18 of 30 points must be awarded pass with special distinction (Väl godkänd) in order for this to be the final course grade.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
