Introduction to Academic English

Course 15 credits

Course literature in English is included in most courses and programmes at university level. Proficiency in English is therefore a requirement for successful academic studies. This course aims to strengthen students’ skills in and knowledge of English in order to facilitate their academic studies.

The course focuses on increasing students’ knowledge of English grammar and syntax and on developing their academic reading and listening skills. Students are also required to write academic essays and they will work on developing their presentation skills. Additionally, students are encouraged to expand their academic vocabulary range.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars. All teaching and course materials/literature is in English.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of English grammar, vocabulary and expressions
  • discuss strategies for communication in multilingual contexts
  • identify and describe differences between formal/informal English and written/spoken language
  • communicate effectively in English in both writing and speech
  • accurately use grammatical terminology
  • read and correctly summarise academic texts
  • write short essays according to academic convention
  • plan and execute an oral presentation for a specific audience
  • identify his or her own linguistic difficulties and judge his or her need for continued study


Active participation in seminars; continuous assessment of written assignments and an oral presentation.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
