Course 7,5 credits
Communication is a fundamental part of policies, political decision-making and the public perception of environmental issues and risks. This course focuses on the processes of environmental communication and aims to advance the understanding of complex communication prosseses, involving a broad range of actors and stakeholders. Public communication strategies are analysed and related to institutional structures, as well as to public attitudes on environmental issues. Attention will be given to communication with the public, the media and other institutions. Crisis communication by various bodies in connection with various social disturbances (accidents, catastrophes, etc.) is also a field of interest addressed by this course. Furthermore, the course covers the media's reporting of extraordinary events such as the 2004 tsunami. This is a Master's level course for those who are interested in learning about and working in the field of communication, environmental issues and decision-making. It is also offered as part of the Master's programme in Environmental Science specialising in Environment, Communication and Politics.

The course is designed around lectures in combination with mandatory group sessions and discussion seminars.
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
• critically evaluate and compare different theories and perspectives in the field of environmental communication
• analyse and evaluate the different roles of organisations in processes of environmental communication
• apply an advanced theoretical framework to different cases and issues concerning risk communication, public relations, and media activism
• present and discuss literature reviews and reports in oral and written forms
• critically assess media-related ethical aspects in relation to theories on environmental communication.
Written home examination and oral contributions in seminars.
Absence from mandatory seminars can, after consultation with the course coordinator, be complemented with alternative tasks. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again. Complementary tasks must be handed in within one year of course completion.
Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
