Political Decision Making and Environmental Management II
Course 7,5 credits
This course focuses on the advanced analysis of institutional structures that affect the environmental policies and strategies of the European Union, and how the EU impacts environmental decision-making in the member states. In order to facilitate this analysis, general decision-making theory, rational theories and new institutionalism are given special attention. However, other theoretical perspectives are also scrutinised through individual studies chosen by the students. These studies examine, among other things, how and to what extent the EU influences national environmental decision-making, and to what extent member states are able to form their own policies in accordance with their circumstances. In order to cooperate and exchange knowledge with research groups at Södertörn University, special attention is paid to the situation in the Baltic Sea Region.

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
- describe and analyse the properties of different institutional theories
- build institutional models for the analysis of specified environmental conditions
- analyse the problems and opportunities presented by international environmental policies
- design and complete an empirical environmental study, using different analytical tools based on structural theories.
- assess the potential consequences for sustainability in relation to various forms of institutional solutions to environmental problems
The course is examined by:
- Written reports
- Reviews of other students’ reports
- Oral presentations
Absence from compulsory seminars may, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated for through written assignments. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again.
Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
