Approaches to Political Science

Course 15 credits

The aim of this course is to provide in-depth knowledge of the theories relating to specific analytical approaches that play a prominent part in Political Science research at Södertörn University. The course is closely connected to ongoing research at the department. The focus is on two themes: comparative politics and international relations. Examples of areas that are analysed are: democracy and democratisation, political economy, organisation and leadership, international relations and European integration.

Course design

The course is based on lectures and mandatory seminars.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • recount classic and alternative analytical approaches in political science;
  • recount and problematise classic analytical approaches in the fields of comparative politics and international relations;
  • recount critical and alternative analytical approaches in the fields of comparative politics and international relations;
  • analyse, independently and critically, strengths and weaknesses in basic theories of comparative and international politics;
  • formulate, critically, independently and creatively, research problems in political science, and plan and implement research within specific time frames;
  • evaluate and reflect over the scope and limitations of various analytical approaches in political science.


Seminar participation and a written take-home exam.

Occasional absence from a seminar can be compensated for by a written exercise, as advised by the examiner.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
