Qualitative Research Methods

Course 7,5 credits

This course presents and critically assesses qualitative methods for the collection, interpretation and analysis of empirical data. Specific methods that are focused on include qualitative research interviews, archival research, participant observation and a variety of methods for textual analysis. The course addresses the strengths, weaknesses and applicability of each method. This not only deepens students’ understanding of the advantages and limitations of qualitative methods, but also develops their skills for using such methods in practice. Furthermore, ethical and gender considerations for various methods are thoroughly discussed.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • recount, at an advanced level, the aims, logic and character of various research methods that are used in the collection, interpretation and analysis of data;
  • independently apply and use qualitative research methods;
  • understand and evaluate, at an advanced level, research based on qualitative methods;
  • reflect, at an advanced level, on the scope and limitations involved in using qualitative methods.


The course is examined via:
-Written take-home exam
-Active participation in seminars
-Written hand-in assignments

Occasional absence from a seminar can be compensated for by a written exercise, as advised by the examiner.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
