Digital Media Technologies: Production and Literacy

Course 15 credits

This course consists of two modules that combine theoretical perspectives on digital media technologies and critical media literacy with media production. Both modules combine lectures with explorative mappings, analysis and production exercises, where the students' different backgrounds, media literacy profiles and media production skills are a resource.

The Archives and Algorithms module focuses on digital production, storage and data processing in online media contexts. Some of the core questions concern how content, users, and production are organised as digital media archives, clouds and big data and how this can be linked to collaborative production and participatory social media. Examples are taken from the commercial media sector and public bodies (e.g. governments, libraries), as well the domain of digital commons and alternative media. This module offers theoretical perspectives on archives and algorithms in combination with hands on exercises/analytical exercises.

The second module, Critical Media and Information Literacy, discusses the media literacy tradition in relation to theories of media critique and media and citizenship. The focus is on NGO-based critical media literacy movements and alternative media, rather than formal school-based media education.

Course design

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, practical exercises and project work, both individually and in groups. Theoretical and practical elements are integrated to train students in reflection and analysis..

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • express deepened knowledge of theoretical perspectives about digital media technologies
  • nuanced and critically discuss and problematize production conditions of digital media
  • nuanced and critically discuss and problematize media literacy
  • apply the theoretical knowledge in his/her own analyses and media productions
  • reflect upon the development of digital media technologies
  • critically evaluate different theoretical perspectives about media literacy
