Biodiversity and Conservation
Course 7,5 credits
In order to fully understand the meaning and complexity of life, diversity issues need to be addressed at different biological levels, from genes to ecosystems. Students will be presented with biodiversity theory, the patterns and processes of biodiversity and different levels of threats to biodiversity within and among populations, species, habitats and ecosystems. Students will study the conceptual and ethical background of biodiversity conservation, the societal problems involved in conservation processes, and the relationship between conservation and sustainable development. The course includes lectures, seminars, and projects.

Lectures, seminars, computer-aided theoretical modelling and small research projects.
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to
- difine and discuss different aspects of biological diversity, such as diversity within species, at species level, at ecosystem level, and at different spatial and temporal scales
- critically analyse theories and models for different aspects of conservation biology
- synthesise biological and social theories to enable a complete analysis of the role of biodiversity in a sustainable human society
- discuss biodiversity from a multitude of ethical viewpoints
1001, Theory (4 credits) is examined via a written take-home examination
1002, Project assignments (3.5 credits) is examined via oral presentations at seminars and individually written reports. Absence from seminars must be compensated for via additional assignments. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student takes the course again. Compensatory assignments must be handed in within one year of course completion.
Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
