Entry requirements: Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study, and English B or equivalent.

Selection: On the basis of previous university credits. Between 30 and 285 credits may be taken into account.

Media and Everyday Life

Course 7,5 credits

This course focuses on theories and methods that deal with the media's inclusion in everyday life, and how the media relates to the formation of subcultures, identities, lifestyles, etc.

The seminars are led by a tutor, but are designed to stimulate advanced reviews, comparisons, assessments, critical analyses or modulations of the literature by students. The assigned literature includes original classical texts as well as recent doctoral theses.

The course is a part of the Master's programme in Media Communication and Cultural Analysis, but may also be studied independently.

Course design

Instruction takes place in the form of seminars.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • provide a detailed outline of the media roles and functions in everyday life
  • independently summarise, analyse and evaluate advanced academic texts, and to communicate these skills orally (in academic seminars) and in written reports
  • independently and critically discuss key theoretical and methodological issues related to research in the field of media and everyday life


The course is examined through: written take-home exam, active participation in seminars. Attendance is compulsory at the introduction and at all seminars.
Oral presentations

Absence from individual seminars can be compensated by written assignments as instructed by the course coordinator.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
