Entry requirements: Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study, and English B or equivalent.

Selection: On the basis of previous university credits. Between 30 and 285 credits may be taken into account.

Media and Representation

Course 7,5 credits

This course focuses on theories and methods that deal with the representational forms of the media, and how media texts may be understood in terms of genres, narration, aesthetics, and representation of reality.
The seminars are led by a tutor, but are designed to stimulate advanced reviews, comparisons, assessments, critical analyses or modulations of the literature by students. The assigned literature includes original classical texts, as well as recent doctoral theses.
The course is a part of the Master's programme in Media Communication and Cultural Analysis, but may also be studied independently.

Course design

Instruction takes place in the form of seminars.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • provide a detailed description of the representational forms of the media, and how media texts may be understood in terms of genres, narrative, aesthetics, and representation of reality
  • independently summarise, analyse and evaluate qualified academic texts, and to communicate these skills orally (in academic seminars) and in written reports
  • autonomously and critically discuss key theoretical and methodological issues related to research in the field of media and entertainment.

Examination

The course is examined via: Written take home exam, active participation in seminars. Attendance is compulsory at the introduction and at all seminars.
-Oral presentations

Absence from individual seminars can be compensated by written assignments as instructed by the course coordinator.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
