Infectious Disease Control in Changing Environments

Course 7,5 credits

The emergence and re-emergence of major infectious diseases is a growing and potentially huge pan-global problem. One consequence of globalisation is that events in one part of the world may have a rapid impact on local health status in multiple international locations. This course explores the biological and environmental aspects behind the origin and spread of major infectious diseases. Students study different infections and biological agents (bacteria, viruses, prions, fungi and parasite infections); antibiotics and antibiotic resistance; antiviral substances; vaccines; mechanisms behind the spread of infectious diseases; diagnostics and the evolution and origin of infectious diseases in a changing environment.

The information below comes from the syllabus and is valid from: autumn semester 2018

Course design

The course consists of lectures, mandatory seminars and study visits. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again. Compensatory assignments must be handed in within one year of course completion.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to

  • analyse biological processes that regulate the spread and emergence of infectious diseases
  • categorise important infectious diseases according to the type of biological agent, spreading mechanism and disease progression
  • give examples of how infectious diseases are controlled, diagnosed and treated on the basis of health conditions at different geographical scales
  • distinguish future risks for changes in the prevalence and distribution of infectious diseases in relation to local and global changes in the environment and climate
  • distinguish future risks for the evolution of new infectious diseases in relation to local and global changes in environment and climate
  • critically evaluate and present scientific literature.

The course is assessed by written examination and by oral and written assignments.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
