Entry requirements: The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including a minimum of 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, Media and Communication Studies, or the equivalent.

Selection: On the basis of previous university credits. Between 30 and 285 credits may be taken into account.

Multidisciplinary Research Project in Environmental Science

Course 7,5 credits

The capacity to formulate and implement multi- and interdisciplinary projects, as well as for broad thinking and collaboration on complex problems with people with differing backgrounds, is increasingly important in academia and wider society. The course addresses these issues by training students in how to formulate research projects in which the scientific basis, the participants’ personal experiences and the tasks to be performed are of a multi- or interdisciplinary nature and cover topics related to environmental science and infectious disease control. Students work in groups to formulate and design a scientific project that integrates different scientific disciplines. Students will also be trained in peer-reviewing other projects.

Course design

The course is based on group work under supervision. The course includes introductory lectures, but the majority of the course consists of seminars in which a problem-oriented approach is applied.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • formulate a research problem based on previous research in environmental science, focusing on either ecosystem management, infectious disease control, or environment communication and politics.
  • evaluate important factors, processes and stakeholder relations relevant for an identified environmental sciences research problem and analyse the implications for the problem formulation, planning and feasibility of the research project.
  • develop a multidisciplinary research project that integrates theoretical perspectives and methodological tools.
  • analyse the feasibility, generalisability, and scientific and societal relevance/ implications of a formulated multidisciplinary research project.
  • evaluate the ethical aspects of an environmental research project.

  • Participation in seminars
Final reports that receive a fail grade in the regular examination can be revised/supplemented twice, according to the instructions of the examiner. If after these revisions/additions the final report still does not receive a pass grade, the student needs to write a new final report.

Absence from seminars may, after consultation with the examiner, be compensated for through written assignments. However, this does not apply to the mandatory project presentation seminar, which includes a peer review of another student’s case study project. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
