The Tourist Company

Course 7.5 credits

The course is designed from a service management perspective. Initially, characteristics of a travel service are discussed. In the area of marketing, markets, distribution, market plans, marketing activities etc. are studied. In the area of organisation, company culture, business types, management principals, service meetings, employees’ motivation, etc., are studied. Finally, external factors for the tourist company are covered.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student is able to:

  • describe the characteristics of a tourist company from a service perspective.
  • analyse how external conditions in a city destination may influence tourist entrepreneurship and how the tourist companies operate in a changing industry structure.
  • identify different types of tourism markets and analyse if these can be influenced by individual tourist companies.
  • design a tourist segmented market survey, resulting in a written marketing plan for a tourist company's marketing and product launches.
  • develop a service management system which can be used in a tourist company from an entrepreneurial small business perspective.
  • critically examine and evaluate tourist companies' influence on society from a sustainable perspective.

At most one (1) missing seminar occasion can, in consultation with the course coordinator, be compensated for via an individual written assignment.
