English B

Course 30 credits

The B-course builds on knowledge and skills you have developed during your first term. In this respect it is a more advanced course in language and literature. The B-course consists of the British Literature module, Grammar module, and the one focusing on language and power covering subjects such as discourse analysis and sociolinguistics. In addition, one of the four following specialized modules is given each term: Postcolonial Literature and Culture, American Literature - Historical Perspectives, Multiethnic American Literature and Culture, or English Literature and Capitalism.

Course design

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars. All teaching is conducted in English for students to improve their oral and written proficiency. The course literature is in English.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student is able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • provide a general account of the history of British and American English-language literature primarily, but also of other English-speaking regions
  • describe and use appropriate terminology to discuss central issues within a demarcated literary or cultural field, such as the historical development of literary currents, postcolonial authorship or race and ethnicity in American literature
  • analyse the relationship between language and power in oral and written texts --describe central concepts and theories of sociolinguistics and discourse analysis --thoroughly master grammatical patterns in English and explain the structure of the language
  • account for important conventions of genre and fundamental patterns in academic analyses in literature and linguistics.
Competence and skills
  • write English-language literary and linguistic essays with a substantial degree of linguistic precision
  • show a deepened ability to conduct close readings of literary works in their historical and social contexts
  • give and respond to constructive criticism
  • use correct techniques of citation and reference
Judgement and approach
  • reflect on the conditions of humanities studies and one's own role as a producer of knowledge
  • reflect on the relationship between language and power in one's own and others' use of language
  • critically discuss possibilities and limitations of linguistic analyses
  • critically discuss different theoretical reasons for reading literature from a historical perspective.

If a student has missed more than 20% of the seminars and lectures on a course module the student can only compensate this by, on another occasion, attending the seminars and/or lectures required to reach a minimum level of 80% overall attendance.

At least 18 of 30 points must be awarded pass with special distinction (väl godkänd) in order for this to be the final course grade.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
