Comparative European Politics

Course 7.5 credits

This course is about the theory, practice and dynamics of comparative politics, one of the major sub-disciplines of political science, with specific application to a particular empirical domain, Europe. Some core theoretical perspectives in comparative politics are discussed.
The course also gives an opportunity for specialisation within comparative politics, in such areas as elections and political parties, democratisation, civil society, and interest organisations.
The course is a useful theoretical preparation for writing a C-level essay.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course the student is able to:

• autonomously describe an critically describe theories of comparative politics and their empirical applicability
• demonstrate understanding of the dynamics and processes of politics and political systems in comparative European contexts
• relate theoretical issues to cases and sub-fields within the study of comparative European politics
• formulate theoretically and empirically relevant research questions within the study of comparative politics
