Entry requirements: The equivalent of English B and a Bachelor's degree including a minimum of 90 credits in Environmental Science, Bioscience, Political Science, Sociology, International Health, or Media and Communication Studies as the main field of study, and 15 credits in Environmental Science in second cycle.

Selection: On the basis of previous university credits. Between 30 and 285 credits may be taken into account.

Generation of Knowledge in Environmental Science

Course 7.5 credits

In this course, students discuss and analyse what Environmental Science is and how knowledge is produced and used in Environmental Science. This discussion is based on a broad consideration of the philosophy of science, theory of science and research methodology. In this discussion, approaches such as positivism, post-positivism, constructivism and critical realism are introduced and compared. The limitations and uncertainties of scientific explanations and predictions are examined, as well as how the utility of various research methodologies may relate to the type and scale of the environmental issue being studied.

Course design

This course primarily builds on lectures in combination with compulsory seminars in which different theoretical and methodological topics are discussed.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • describe the multifaceted nature of environmental science and the generation of knowledge within environmental science
  • relate theoretical approaches and methodologies used in environmental science to major forms of scientific inquiry described within the philosophy of science
  • understand the utility, limitations and uncertainties associated with various research methodologies and seen from different theories of science
  • critically assess various forms of knowledge production

Seminars
  • Seminars and seminar assignments
Absence from compulsory seminars can, after consultation with the course coordinator, be compensated for by supplementary assigments. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again.
The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.
