Selection: On the basis of previous university credits. Between 30 and 285 credits may be taken into account.

Analytical Tools in Environmental Science

Course 7.5 credits

This is a hands-on course in GIS, statistics and experimental design. Its focus is how to apply different techniques for analysing scientific data. The course covers spatial analysis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to address environmental and disease-related issues. It also examines the power of systematic reviews and meta-analysis, and discusses the pros and cons of techniques for combining the results of different scientific studies into one analysis. Data is often acquired through questionnaires or semi-structured interviews, and analyses of this type of data needs a good understanding of scaling. Different scaling techniques also allow for different types of analyses. The course therefore discusses the appropriateness of different types of coding, and scaling in the context of experimental design.

Course design

The course consists of lectures, seminars, practical computer exercises, and project assignments.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • plan and perform scientific investigations and experiments
  • analyse and make relevant conclusions based on the selected research design
  • create a geographic information system (GIS) and apply it to an environmental spatial pattern
  • analyse spatial distribution patterns using geostatistical methods
  • perform a metaanalysis
  • present the results of a scientific analysis
  • evaluate the pros and cons of different methods used for scientific experiments in environmental science

Oral and written presentations at seminars, computer exercises, and individual written project assignments

Absence from course elements may, after consultation with the course coordinator, be compensated for by supplementary assignments. Absence from more than 50% of the seminars requires that the student take the course again.

Grading criteria will be distributed at course/module start.
