The Centre for Studies in Practical Knowledge and Philosophy Department at Södertörn University will organize an international conference in philosophy to invite to a larger conversation about the role and importance of existential philosophy today, both in an academic and a political context.

Political Existence

In recent years the financial perspective and financial explanatory models have taken increasing space in community politics and media at the same time as an increasing number of people in the West must learn to live with major social and economic injustice in its immediate neighborhood.

political-existenceToday there is also a growing interest in other perspectives than the prevailing economic one. We have among our students met a growing interest in the existence of philosophical perspectives on political developments in combination with a frustration that the existence philosophy often is considered as mainly dealing with issues concerning private wellbeing and self-realization instead of political perspectives on injustice and environmental pollution.

The Centre for Studies in Practical Knowledge and Philosophy Department at Södertörn University will organize an international conference in philosophy to invite to a larger conversation about the role and importance of existential philosophy today, both in an academic and a political context. We want to investigate in what way perspectives from existential philosophy might be of interest in an era that has come to be associated with instrumentalisation, economization, quality assurance, measurability and globalization, and if they might enable a political thinking motivated by solidarity, environmental awareness or at least political commitment instead of profit maximization and benefit approach.

The idea is to have a discussion with speakers from different countries and continents that have different approaches to existential philosophy but all in one way or another interested in existential philosophy from a political perspective.

The conference will be open to all interested but is aimed primarily at researchers and students in philosophy and practical knowledge in the Nordic countries.

This conference is open to everyone. No registration is required.
