Om konferensen

Romani Studies have a history the since 18th century in the Nordic countries. Until the recent decades, academic work has been mostly conducted by individual scholars with varying interests and educational backgrounds. Romani Studies got a firmer academic status along with the establishment of the Romani Language and Culture as a minor subject at the University of Helsinki in August 2012, and now with the launching of Romani Studies at Södertörn University. The scholars working on Romani Studies in the Nordic countries have lacked an established joint Nordic forum of their own despite many common research interests due to both partly the same historical origin of the Roma and historico-cultural and political similarities between the countries.

The Nordic Conference on Romani Studies continues a line of annual meetings among academic scholars working in the Nordic countries on different aspects of Romani Studies, including history, anthropology, political science, sociology and linguistics. The primary goal is to maintain and develop scientific multidisciplinary discussion and to further Nordic networking and cooperation in Romani Studies. The conference brings together established scholars, post-doctoral researchers and postgraduate students active in the field and provide them a forum to present their on-going work and to discuss it with a multidisciplinary audience. Organising the conference at SH strengthens the University’s profile as an important Nordic center in the field of Romani Studies as well its cooperation with Nordic universities active in this field. Several of the researchers originate from East Europe, and work on themes dealing with East European countries. The inclusion of scholars from other regions will also be promoted through invitation of keynote speakers outside the Nordic geographic area.
