Om konferensen

The eighteenth century is the Grand Siècle of modern European aesthetics. While contemporary aesthetic autonomy owes its debts to the progress made during the eighteenth century, such autonomy was nevertheless born out of an aesthetic miscellany addressing art, nature, morals, as well as politics – usually all at once. European philosophers and critics such as the third Earl of Shaftesbury, Joseph Addison, Mary Wollstonecraft, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Denis Diderot, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, and Friedrich Schlegel, all perceived aesthetic experience within these large parameters. This conference addresses to what extent the current diachronic narrative of the establishment of aesthetic autonomy facilitates or impedes our understanding of the great heteronomy out of which modern European aesthetics arose. The conference aims furthermore to initiate an international research network for scholars and researchers working on eighteenth-century aesthetics.
