Research

I conduct, or have conducted, research in the following areas: Visual sociology; environmental sociology; quantitative methods (questionnaires, online surveys, computer-aided surveys), political extremism and the use of time and balance between work and leisure.

Ongoing research project

I am currently involved in the following research on the relationships between growth, welfare and the environment:

Beyond GDP growth. Scenarios for sustainable building and planning, see the project website: http://www.bortombnptillvaxt.se/english/startpage.4.21d4e98614280ba6d9e68 d.html External link.

The project is financed by Formas and expected to last five years between 2014 and 2019. Within the framework of the project, I have responsibility for a work package called Time and Social Security. The focus in this work package is to analyse and illustrate the distribution of temporal welfare and time conflicts in a sustainable society. I will try to explore the main effects of declining growth for the experience of time conflicts and stress. One importand research questions will be: Do people who have decreased their work hours, and also reduced their consumption of goods and services, experience a higher or different degree of welfare?

I will also study the significance of non-synchronicity, i.e. a development in which certain sectors of society and work are quickly affected and transformed by zero growth, while others change more slowly. The following methods will be used: in-depth quantitative re-analysis of time use studies complemented with a qualitative study (e.g. in-depth interviews, field research) of time pioneers who voluntarily have decreased their working hours.
