I am a doctoral student at the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies, and enrolled in the Baltic and East European Graduate School (BEEGS). In my research I study policy for urban transport in Stockholm and Tallinn.

Transport and how it is structured has a powerful impact on urban structure and life. It is also widely recognized as a crucial factor in global work towards sustainable development, and more locally as a necessity of everyday life and urban growth. These many functions of transport, as well as observed discrepancies between climate targets and projections, made me interested in studying the basic assumptions in transport policy:

  • How is ‘sustainable transport’ described in policy?
  • Into what kind of tool does policy make transport?
  • How does this relate to ‘sustainability’?

Both Stockholm and Tallinn have declared themselves ’green’ and made transport a key instrument in this. But does this mean the same thing in both cities?

I use Carol Bacchi’s approach What’s the problem represented to be, and the logics of critical explanation developed by Jason Glynos and David Howarth. I consider problem representation and social, political, and fantasmatic logics. My aim is to contribute to the growing field of qualitative and critical studies of transport policy.
