The dissertation “One nation, one language? Immigrant integration in multilingual states” (working title) investigates how states negotiate the intersection of historical minority governance and immigrant integration, two processes central for European nation-building.

The dissertation studies the role of non-dominant/minority languages in immigrant integration policies in Europe. It will consist of four essays investigating the topic: a policy overview/typology connecting minority language policies and language requirements for immigrant integration in Europe; a study on integration policy in Swedish-speaking Finland; a study on integration policy on Sámi land colonized by Sweden; a study on immigration into Turkish-speaking communities in Bulgaria.
