Research

I am interested in exploiting the uncountable possibilities of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) with a variety of applications in environmental science. My newest project is about the relation between the pattern of COVID-19 and different environmental factors.

I got my PhD in 2009 and became Associate Professor in Physical Geography in 2016, both at the Department of Physical Geography, Stockholm University. Originally I am geomorphologist, using GIS as a tool, for environmental risk assessment and in glacial-geomorphological landscape development. Since 2017 I am senior lecturer in environmental sciences and GIS at Södertörn University.

PhD supervision:

Patrick Spets (ongoing): Exploring GIS (Geographic Information Systems) as a Relevant Method in Environmental Research on Antimicrobial Resistance Transmission

Elena Palenova (ongoing): Restoration Potentials Based on Geophysical Characteristics and Landscape Connectivity for areas under natural (f.e. wildfires) impacts

Teaching

I am teaching GIS with an emphasis on its applications in environmental sciences. I teach with a combination of lectures and practical exercises and projects. In my lectures I emphasize that GIS is the tool to reach your goal – don’t be afraid of GIS, explore its possibilities and reach your goal. Another main point in my lectures is the connection between GIS and reality - the important awareness about where your data come from and what they really show. This includes sources of error and of course copyright issues and correct referencing.

The connection between university education and the labour market is of major importance. I make great effort to keep up to date, to keep in touch with alumni and the organize meetings between my students and alumni.
