Born March 29, 1943, Göteborg.  Married, two daughters, six grandchildren.


Present position: Professor emeritus of human geography, Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES), Södertörn University, SE-141 89 Huddinge, Sweden.

Project leader: The influence of political territorial hierarchies on local development and relations in cross-border areas. The role of Szczecin as central place in relation to the divided Pomeranian hinterland, finished in 2014. 

Member of TRATEBBB-project; Teaching religion and thinking education in the BAltic-Barents Brim , project leader Dr. Peter Strandbrink, finished in 2015/2016.

1986 - 2002   Byråchef (Director), Swedish Institute (under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs): International academic exchange, cultural relations.

2005-2006   Acting Director, CBEES, Södertörn University.

1970- 2009   Board member, vice chairman and chairman, Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography (SSAG) and several other associations.

2010 - 2017  Chair of the editorial advisory board of the Journal Baltic Worlds, Södertörn University, 2018 - member of the board.  

Other appointments and activities

Active participation at scientific and academic conferences in around 26 countries. Leader of official academic and cultural delegations to several countries, mainly in Asia, and member of cultural and academic delegations to several European countries.

 Main research interests: Urban, social and political geography, geolinguistics and the history of  human geography including geopolitics.
