This two-year Master’s programme provides comprehensive knowledge of the theory and practice of the modern media, as well as problem solving, advanced analysis and project design abilities for use within the media sector, thus preparing you for a varied range of professional careers.

Potential careers in research or the practical application of knowledge This two-year Master’s programme is excellent preparation for doctoral studies within the field of media and communication, nationally and internationally. Current research and practice in media technology and production During the first year of the programme, you will study the theories and methods of media studies. The courses cover subjects such as canonical texts, the media and culture industries, the media and everyday life and the media and representation, examining contemporary media cultures from a historical perspective. The second semester start with a course theories that relate to digital and interactive media and the datafied society, using the perspectives of mediatization and datafication. The next course, "Digital Media Technologies" includes a focus on civic media literacy and algorithmic culture. This semester concludes with a methods course that provides in-depth knowledge of academic methods in media and communications studies. The third semester is devoted to optional courses, which means it is possible for you to study abroad at Södertörn’s partner universities. The semester is concluded with the course "Strategies in Media Research" which prepares you for the Master's dissertation. The fourth and final semester is dedicated to the Master’s dissertation. This course covers 30 credits worth of individual tutoring focused on the dissertation's completion, before it is presented in a final seminar. Semester 1 Canonical Texts in Media Theory, 7,5 credits, Media and Culture Industries 7,5 credits, Media and Representation 7,5 credits, Media and Everyday Life 7,5 credits Semester 2 Mediatization and Datafication of Society, 7,5 credits; Digital Media Technologies, 15 credits; Methods in Critical Media and Communication Research, 7,5 credits Semester 3 Optional courses, 22,5 credits; Strategies of Media Research, 7,5 credits Semester 4 Media and Communication Studies: Project, 30 credits Course design This programme includes a great deal of independent study and is taught through seminars, with grades being awarded on the basis of take-home examinations and oral presentations. Work on the dissertation includes seminars at which you discuss the progress of your work and theoretical and methodological aspects of research with other students, as well as individual tutoring.
Problem-solving, advanced analysis and the chance to study abroad The programme is designed to provide you with comprehensive knowledge about the theory and practice of the media, and for you to acquire skills in problem solving, advanced analysis, and project completion. The programme thus prepares you for a broad range of professional careers within the media sector; it is also designed to prepare you for doctoral studies within the field of media and communication, nationally and internationally. The programme provides you with the knowledge to critically engage with the current hyper-mediated society from a critical and historically informed perspective. Central contemporary media technologies and production processes are analysed with the help of central traditions of media theory. The third semester of the programme is devoted to optional courses, allowing you to specialise in topics closely related to your intended dissertation subject, and even to study these courses at another university in Sweden or abroad.
