Rita Figueiras: Pandora’s box or the role of the EU austerity model in the changing relations between capital, politics, and the media in Portugal

Higher seminar with Rita Figueiras from Universitade Catolica Portugesa, arranged by Media and Communication Studies at the School of Culture and Education, Södertörn University

The endemic tension within the political-economic fabric of the advanced-capitalist democratic societies has reached a new peak since the great recession. Despite being historically recurrent since the nineteenth century, the collapse of the American financial system escalated, in 2008, from a disturbance within the socio-economic order into an economic and political crisis of global dimensions, presenting growing risks both for economies and for democracies. Such environment has been accelerating the path towards what Colin Crouch coined the post-democracy era, as important economic decisions are happening at a level beyond the scope of democracy.

This has been even more evident in the Eurozone indebt countries, such as Portugal. Portugal’s case translates the complexity of the post-democracy model, which combines formal components of the democratic regime with new political characteristics that make it drift away from the former, while the erosion of some fundamental pillars of democracy is bringing back elements of the pre-democracy era.

The morphing of the Portuguese media landscape and changes in the mediatisation of politics can be read as examples of this process, albeit with its own specificities. If globalization and neoliberalism are important analytical lenses to assess media change worldwide, national context still holds considerable weight to explain specific changes. Portugal’s (semi-)peripheral condition and colonial heritage provide a particular angle to understanding the unique social and power relations produced between capital, politics, and the media in the country.
