Nordic Data Journalism Conference, NODA 2018

One day academic pre-conference with the latest research on data journalism followed by two days of inspiration, tools and panels.

    Academic pre-conference, March 15

On March 15, there will be an academic pre-conference with the latest research on
data journalism. The keynotes are Jonathan Albright, Research Director at the Tow
Center for Digital Journalism, on facing the data: post-truth digital journalism and
Eddy Borges-Rey, University of Stirling, and Florian Stalph, University of Passau, on
assessing the eco system around data-driven reporting.

    Main conference March, 16-17

Successful data journalists will talk about their stories and how they succeeded in doing
them. We’ll have panel sessions on burning issues of today’s reality. We are also excited to have a session on blockchain and distributed ledger technologies to explore how data journalists could use them for their investigations.

We are proud to present the following keynotes:

    • Derek Willis from ProPublica. Derek was in charge of the ground breaking collaborative project Election Land, where a coalition of 1100 people stood watch over the 2016 US election for the project. He will talk about the many ways that data journalism can play a role in coverage of politics and elections.
    • Megan Lucero from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, head of the local data lab, The Bureau Local. Megan is one of the UK’s leading data journalists and as the head of the Times and the Sunday Times data team. She speaks about the future of investigative data journalism, which according to Megan, is both local and collaborative.
    • Kristoffer Örstadius from Dagens Nyheter has been the rising star in Swedish journalism over the last couple of years. His data driven stories, where he uses agents and programming, has forced ministers to leave office and revealed new facts about the Swedish housing crisis, immigration and school system. He will tell us how he managed to do his ground breaking stories and still leave office at 5pm every day.
    • Helena Bengtsson, Swedish Television is now back at SVT, leading a newteam for advanced data journalism before the 2018 election, after three years at the Guardian in London. She will speak about data journalism at SVT and The Guardian and why data journalism should be aggressively collaborative
