Digital media usage among older adults in Finland: The life course perspective

Higher seminar in Media and Communication studies with Sanna Kuoppamäki.

Older adults are active users of digital media technologies today. Despite this, they encounter unique challenges when operating with digital technologies and interacting with digital service platforms. Understanding the needs, capabilities and interests of older adults’ digital engagement requires understanding of both generational identities and life stage factors.

This presentation discusses to what extent life stage (including age, socio-demographic and socio-economic factors) can be perceived as explanatory determinants in older adults’ engagement with digital media and entertainment technologies. At first, I present empirical findings from two quantitative data sets that cover the digital media usage among older adults in Finland.

The first data includes the use of mobile technologies (smartphones and tablet computers) for online shopping and entertainment media practices, highlighting the use of these technologies among adults aged 50 to 74 in Finland (N=322). The second data presents preliminary findings from the ACT cross-national, longitudinal data ‘Older audiences in digital media environment’ collected among respondents aged 62 to 91 in 2018 in Finland (N=1520).

Preliminary findings of the data analysis suggest that mobile phone activity, such as application of mobile phone for website surfing, instant messages, SNS, TV, radio, podcasts, music as well as photography and app usage is best predicted by chronological age, family status, the presence of children in the household and living environment (urban and rural area).

To this end, the presentation discusses to what extent life stage can be perceived as an explanatory factor in older adults’ digital engagement, and how life transitions could be taken into consideration when investigating older adults’ usage of digital technologies for various media activities across the life course in the Nordic context.
