Cultural Technologies and the Transfer of Tradition in the Late Russian Empire

Panel discussions, presentations, and the participants’ current projects.

The symposium investigates the role of the Silver Age and its activists as pioneers in the invention of the Russian past as an area of institutional and public policies, of cultural politics in the field of history and tradition, and of the persona of cultural worker as the promoter of heritage values through criticism, education, and curatorship. We are looking at the Silver Age as the beginning of cultural technologies that survived the military and revolutionary destruction and further on were adapted to the needs of the Soviet state. Thus, Yurii Tynianov’s famous thesis about the 19th century literary “archaizers” in fact acting as “passionate innovators” of Russian poetry can be also applied to the archaizing innovators of the Silver Age in the sphere of visual culture.

They produced a new ancient Russia as an object of cultural technologies, such as artwork attribution and conservation, museum and exhibition practices such as curatorship; collectorship and connoisseurship; art pedagogy and marketing. Within these circles in fact the concept of cultural heritage in its contemporary understanding was invented.
