By providing access to previously unavailable to larger publics sources of information, digital archives mobilise communities to challenge state archives, which have always been central institutions for nation building and maintenance of political dominance through wielding power over the shape and direction of historical scholarship and collective memory. Being alternative public platforms for historical negotiations these archives become sites of conflict as they enable restitution and demand justice putting archival activists, perpetrators and victims at risk (Miessen & Chateigné 2016).

In Russia, where aggressive patriotic and nationalistic discourses, historical manipulations as well as falsified representations of social reality are thriving in a fertile environment of nationalism and nostalgia for imperial grandeur, working with memories and archiving becomes a risky business putting activists and volunteers at risk. Hence, studying digital archival activities sanctioned by Russian citizens and non-governmental organisations becomes all more necessary as they reveal complex relationships among various interested parties by surfacing struggles for objective representations of both past and present.

By investigating bottom-up practices of archiving cultural heritage this talk will provide new insights into how civil society positions itself in relation to the Russian state in the times of political instability fuelled by propaganda campaigns, memory wars and resurrection of imperial sentiments (Kolstø & Blakkisrud 2018).
