Tomas Venclova (b. 1937) is a world renowned Lithuanian poet, prose writer and literary critic, Professor Emeritus of Slavonic Literature at Yale University. Together with his close friends, Nobel Prize winners Czesław Miłosz and Joseph Brodsky, he belongs to a generation of influential Eastern European literary figures who have given clear poetic form to the experience of totalitarian regimes. The poet took part in the dissident movement during the Soviet period.

The talk is moderated by Stefan Ingvarsson, Cultural Counsellor at The Embassy of Sweden in Moscow. Before moving to Russia he was the artistic director and founder of the international literary festival Stockholm Literature at Moderna Museet. He has a background in publishing and as a translator of prose and poetry from Polish to Swedish. His grandparents were born and raised within the Polish speaking minority in Lithuania before the large population movements of the Second World War.

The talk will be followed by a reception that takes place at Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES). Please confirm your participation by sending an email marked with CBEES Public Lecture 2018 in the subject to confcbees@sh.se.
