    On 1 January 2017, Kimmo Granqvist was appointed Professor in Romani Studies at Södertörn University. Kimmo has twenty years' experience of Romani Studies and has worked at both the University of Helsinki and Södertörn University.

    Public defence of doctoral thesis: Ticks and tick-borne encephalitis virus – from nature to infection

    Naveed Asghar will defend his doctoral thesis on 19 December 2016. The thesis examines populations of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus in infected ticks and hosts. TBE is an incurable and potentially lethal virus infection that may affect the brain or meninges, leading to brain damage.

    Public defence of doctoral thesis: reconsidering the meaning of sociality

    Ramona Rat will defend her doctoral thesis, titled “Un-common Sociality” on 21 October. The thesis examines how sociality is different to the sharing of established identities, and how relationships to others can be conceptualised without being based on common ground.

    Julia Kristeva visits Södertörn University

    Julia Kristeva is one of France’s best-known intellectuals and a world-leading psychoanalytical thinker. On 13-15 October, The Kristeva Circle will meet at Södertörn University, attracting around sixty participants from thirteen countries. Julia Kristeva is herself participating in the conference. There will also be a public discussion with Julia Kristeva at Moderna Museet on the evening of 14 October.

    Chantal Mouffe receives an honorary doctorate from Södertörn University

    Chantal Mouffe, Professor of Political Theory at the University of Westminster, is to receive an honorary doctorate from Södertörn University. Chantal Mouffe will have her degree conferred on 25 November.

    Language courses for asylum-seeker doctors

    Sweden has, not least during the recent years’ refugee crisis, received people with great expertise in many different fields - expertise that is not utilised because long asylum processes mean that both courses in Swedish and a potential authorisation can take a long time, as people without a residence permit are not entitled to them. Södertörn University is currently participating in a project in which 18 recently arrived doctors are taking intensive courses in Swedish and Medical Swedish.

    Södertörn University to lead a unique research project on making southern Stockholm “good for everyone”

    Stockholm is expanding rapidly, and is aiming to become Europe’s most attractive region for investors, residents and visitors. The city is also aiming for sustainability, from social, economic and ecological perspectives. However, there are significant social, economic and political tensions and one of many signs of this is the unrest in the suburbs.
    To reverse this trend and create a Stockholm that is good for everyone, this autumn Södertörn University is initiating a major research project called “Att återskapa förorten i fragmenterade landskap” (Reinventing the suburbs in a fragmented landscape).
