Bulgarian professor Diana M. Mishkova to receive an honorary doctorate from Södertörn University

The recipient of Södertörn University’s honorary doctorate for 2019 has now been decided: Diana M. Mishkova. Diana M. Mishkova is a professor of history and director of the Centre for Advanced Study in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Diana M MishkovaMishkova’s historical research has a clear focus on Eastern Europe and the Balkans during the 19th and 20th centuries, specialising in the emergence of nationalism, liberalism and modernisation. At the same time, her research has made great contributions to general insights around the formation of nations and regions, history as a scholarly subject and conceptual history.

“I am very honoured to receive this honorary doctorate from Södertörn University and am looking forward to visiting in February,” says Mishkova.

Södertörn University’s profile, which combines research in the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe with a multicultural perspective, matches well with Diana M. Mishkova’s research. The university has therefore collaborated with Diana M. Mishkova for more than ten years, with numerous researchers from Södertörn University either participating in conferences or working as visiting researchers at the Centre for Advanced Study in Sofia.

“Professor Diana M. Mishkova is an internationally recognised researcher whose work has meant a great deal for how we think about the creation of spatial contexts and mental maps,” says Norbert Götz, professor of history at Södertörn University, who nominated Diana M. Mishkova.

Diana M. Mishkova will be formally awarded her honorary doctorate during a ceremony at Södertörn University on 8 February 2019 and will hold an open lecture at Södertörn Celebrates on 6 February.
