The formal opening ceremony for Police Education at Södertörn University, with speeches by the Minister for Home Affairs, the National Police Commissioner and the Vice-Chancellor.

KandelaberThe first 180 police cadets start their education at Södertörn University in January. This will be celebrated with a formal opening ceremony on 20 January in the university’s auditorium, filled with police cadets, external guests and university staff.

Speakers include the Minister for Home Affairs, Anders Ygeman (S); National Police Commissioner, Dan Eliasson; and Vice-Chancellor, Moira von Wright. High class entertainment will be provided by Cirkus Cirkör and after the ceremony there will be bubbly and canapés in the auditorium’s foyer.

    Background

The Swedish Government decided in 2012 that the basic police training in Stockholm would be moved to a higher education institution, in the same way as police education is conducted at Umeå University and Linnaeus University. In November 2013, the National Police Commissioner gave Södertörn University the task of providing this education.

Police Education at Södertörn University starts in the spring of 2015 and, as the courses expand here with new police cadets every semester, the basic training will be phased out at the National Police Academy in Solna.

Police Education is to be run as contract education and will cover five semesters of full-time study, including a six-month traineeship at a police authority.
