Advanced Seminar, Art History

Destabilising the Museum. Seminar with Matt Smith, Professor of Craft: Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack, Stockholm. Chaired by Håkan Nilsson, prof in Art History, Södertörn University.

Cultural institutions (museums, galleries and historic houses) can present a very fixed and authorised view of history. The reality tends to be more nuanced and complicated. Using case studies from a variety of artist intervention projects, this talk will explore how craft interventions in cultural organisations and destabilise hierarchies and open them up for alternative readings.

Matt Smith is an artist and curator, and Professor of Craft: Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack, Stockholm. He studied Ceramics at the University of Westminster, holds a MA in Museum studies, University of Leicester and a PhD in Queer Craft at the University of Brighton.

Smith is currently Professor of Craft: Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack, Stockholm. Smith is interested in how cultural organisations and objects represent lived lives, using institutional critique and artist interventions.

Solo exhibitions include Flux: Parian Unpacked, Fitzwilliam (2018), Queering the Museum, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (2010-11) and Other Stories, University of Leeds (2012). In 2016 he was Artist in Residence at the V&A.
