Transgressive participation in the digital age
Higher seminar in Media and Communication Studies with Jeffrey Wimmer from University of Augsburg.
Going beyond established academic discourses about the decline of citizens’ political participation in institutional politics, and the rise of alternative forms of political participation my study aims to contribute to one neglected field of research, which Carpentier (2016: 78) calls transgressive forms of participation.
The lecture tries to show the wide scope of mediated participation and its inherent complexity by taking a look at quite two different media contexts, ranging from a quite traditional mass medium to the special case of modern entertainment media, which are both not covered very well in current research on participation and engagement: local community TV and mobile gaming.
