Higher Seminar in Aesthetics - Elisabeth Schellekens
What Do We Owe Beautiful Objects? Protecting Cultural Heritage and Aesthetic Obligations
The lecture of Elisabeth Schellekens (Uppsala) will argue against the standard empiricist
PC249 conception of aesthetic value. Focusing on non-perceptual objects of aesthetic
appreciation, such as scientific demonstrations and philosophical analyses, opens up for a
revised understanding of the distinction between the aesthetic and the cognitive.
On Schellekens’s account, aesthetic experience can be epistemically motivated without
succumbing to the “conflation problem”.
The lecture will be held in English.
