Possible topics of interest are (but not limited to):

• Critical theories (including decolonial theory, queer theory, feminist theory)
• Politics and democracy (e.g., utopian politics, populist discourse, freedom of speech, good governance)
• Aspects and challenges of teaching
• Aspects and challenges of digitalization
• Contemporary and historical perspectives on human settlements
• Conceptualizations and/or problematization of sustainability and sustainable development.

Application Procedure

Deadline for applications: 22nd of August 2022.

The applicant must be enrolled as PhD student at one of the BUP Participating Universities during the time of the workshop. A list of current BUP Participating Universities can be found on the BUP web pages External link..

The application should consist of a summary of the applicant’s doctoral research, as well as a brief description of the specific part/chapter that the presentation will focus on (max 1 page total). Please include information about your disciplinary belonging and your institutional affiliation, as well as contact information (E-mail and telephone). Also, please indicate if you are able to join the workshop “in real life” or only online.

By applying, the applicant agrees to act as a discussant of another participant’s research, in other words, to give constructive feedback and pose questions to the doctoral research of another participant.

Please note that, in case of acceptance of participation, a draft of the specific part of the doctoral research that constitutes the focus of the presentation will be requested no later than one week before the event, in order to assure more substantial feedback. This could be a work in progress, between 5-15 pages (for example the draft of a chapter, an article, or a research plan). All participants will thus receive a draft of another participant’s work one week before the event, as base for their feedback.

Notification of acceptance will be sent out by the 29th of August. The decision regarding the designation of discussants (i.e., the workshop programme) will be made after the notification of acceptance.

The workshop will consist of panel presentations of 3-4 participants/panel, which are then discussed together with the designated discussants (within the same panel), followed by a general discussion with all participants. In addition to these panels, the workshop will include a roundtable session with all participants and invited academic editors, which will focus on possibilities for collaboration and joint publication initiatives. The language of the workshop will be English.
