Swedish Accession to NATO: The Shifting Geopolitics of the Baltic Sea Region
Welcome to a panel discussion where experts from Södertörn University, The Swedish Defence University, The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) and Swedish Defence Research Agency talk about Swedens application to join Nato and the shiftning geopolitics in the Baltic Sea region.
Sweden’s application to join the NATO alliance represents the most profound shift in its international positioning in the 21st century. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine provides the immediate impetus for this new course, but the background and implications of the decision go far beyond this. Why does a country leave behind centuries of neutrality and non-alignment to opt for such a clear change of course? What are the benefits and what are the dangers? How will NATO membership affect Sweden’s future relationship with the rest of the Baltic Sea region, and beyond that with Europe, Eurasia, and the trans-Atlantic world?
For a discussion of these and other questions, we invite you to join four experts on regional security who will share their insights and analysis.
The discussion will be streamed live, you'll find the link here.
