Higher seminar in Economics: Impact of building regulation on energy efficiency
Xiaoying Li, Södertörn University, will present a paper titled Impact of building regulation on energy efficiency - Evidence from energy use in the Swedish multi-apartment buildings”. The seminar will be held in English and hybrid form. Please contact alexandra.allard@sh.se for the Zoom link.
Abstract
Building codes regulate energy efficiency in newly constructed buildings. The study aims to study the effects of tightened building codes on actual energy savings in Swedish multi-apartment buildings. In particular, the study separately evaluates the effects of tightened building codes in late 2011 and another stricter requirement in 2015. By analyzing energy use data from energy performance certificates (EPC), the results suggest that both tightened building codes have a positive and significant effect on reducing specific energy use for buildings with heating methods other than electric heating. However, the actual energy savings are less than the requested tightened levels from the regulation. The finding indicates the existence of the energy efficiency gap.
