International Digital Workshop on the SDGs. Day 1
Incremental and fragmented change is insufficient to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Half-way through Agenda 2030, this 2-day International workshop engages in a mid-term assessment of Agenda 2030, identifies the missing aspects of Agenda 2030 and critically evaluates the SDGs.
Recent calls on the sustainable development goals have asked for transformative action, as incremental and
fragmented change is insufficient to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and meet the
global climate change challenge. SDGs have been described as the transformative ‘Agenda 2030’ that aim
to eradicate poverty, establish socio-economic inclusion and protect the environment. In short, SDGs have
been presented as a panacea but have also been criticized for being inconsistent, difficult to quantify,
implement and monitor. These goals are non-binding, with each country being expected to create their own
national or regional plans. Moreover, the source(s) and the extent of the financial resources and investments
for the SDGs are ambiguous.
Half-way through Agenda 2030, this International workshop sets out to explore, examine and investigate
if these 17 SDGs have been effective in achieving the transformative changes towards sustainable
development. It engages in a mid-term assessment of Agenda 2030, identifies the missing aspects of
Agenda 2030 and critically evaluates SDGs. The quadruple-helix inter-disciplinary research from across
the various continents to present experience and evidence on SDGs is also sourced. The objective is to
explore the SDG framework across: goals; targets; indicators; the 5 thematic areas of the SDGs (peace,
people, planet, prosperity, partnerships); the 3 dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social,
environment); and across various statistical frameworks. The workshop also seeks to investigate SDGs at
the thematical, regional and country level and provide examples of possible applications, implications, and
best practices. This international workshop brings together experts and researchers from around the
globe.
