The Social and Political Transformation of the Post-Soviet Central Asian States

Introduction:
The Central Asian states have experienced a complex evolution since gaining independence, influencing political structures, societal norms, economic systems, and geopolitical relations. This multidisciplinary workshop will provide a unique opportunity to delve into these transformations, encouraging participants to engage with the subject matter through the lenses of various academic disciplines.
The workshop aspires to create an inclusive platform for scholars from diverse disciplines to explore the intricate dimensions of social and political transformation within the Central Asian states in the post-Soviet era. By fostering multidisciplinary perspectives, the aim is to cultivate a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities that have shaped the region's trajectory.
Within the framework of the workshop, we will discuss the following issues:
- How have Central Asian states navigated the political transition post-Soviet independence?
- In what ways can interdisciplinary perspectives enrich our understanding of Central Asia's social and political transformations?
- What role do external actors play in shaping the geopolitical landscape of Central Asia?
- How have social and economic reforms impacted citizens?
- What new challenges have emerged, and how has transformation influenced gender relationships and social activism?
- What are the security challenges in Central Asia, and how can interdisciplinary approaches contribute to conflict resolution?
The editor of Södertörn University's scholarly journal, Baltic Worlds (https://balticworlds.com/ External link, opens in new window.), will present the journal and discuss publishing opportunities.
The online workshop is organised by the Center for Baltic and East European Studies (Södertörn University) in cooperation with the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs, KIMEP University (Almaty) University of World Economy and Diplomacy (Tashkent).
