Network conference: Curating in Times of Crisis

Museums in Times of War: Navigating Emergencies and Long-Term Challenges

Bringing together museum experts from Ukraine, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Sweden, the conference will explore the critical role of museum and heritage professionals in times of military conflict: emergency responses, evolving policies, and the enduring impact of war on cultural heritage.

This conference will provide an opportunity to reconnect generations of Swedish cultural initiatives and reflect on collaborative strategies with museum professionals in war-affected regions.

Speakers:

  • Haykuhi Muradyan (Yerevan State University, Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Yerevan): Insights from her work with Monument Watch, monitoring heritage destruction in the contested Arktsakh region.
  • Yuliya Vaganova (Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Art, Kyiv): How museum work in Ukraine has transformed since the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.
  • Elma Hašimbegović (Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo): Reflections on the long-term impact of war on Sarajevo’s museums.

With the participation of experts from Sweden:

  • Helene Rånlund (ICOM Sweden; National Swedish Museums of Military History; Blue Shield Sweden).
  • Malin Myrin (Stockholm City Museum; ICOMOS; Blue Shield Sweden).
  • Bo A. Lagerqvist (University of Gothenburg; Cultural Heritage without Borders; ICOMOS-CIF).
  • Yuliya Yurchuk (Södertörn University).

This event is part of the 2024–2025 seminar series "Curating in Times of Crisis: A Transregional Research Network Connecting the Baltic, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia", which is led by Irina Sandomirskaja in collaboration with Johanna Mannergren and Maria Silina.
