Abstract

This thesis explores the blue economy and renewable energy, both of which are central to the European Union’s economic and environmental strategies. Encompassing a wide range of maritime and maritime-related sectors, including fisheries, the blue economy centers on the sustainable utilization of maritime resources. It represents a key concept in EU policy, aiming to drive growth, improve livelihoods, and create jobs, while maintaining the health of the ocean ecosystem. Meanwhile, expanding renewable energy is seen as a necessity for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Among renewable energy sources, wind power has become a significant contributor, accounting for 18 percent of the EU’s final energy consumption in 2023.

To address these themes, the thesis includes four essays. Essay I examines employment dynamics in the Swedish blue economy relative to firms in other sectors. Essays II and III focus on EU fisheries governance. More specifically, Essay II examines the policy preferences of EU member states, as indicated by bargaining outcomes, while Essay III assesses the lobbying success of interest groups within the Baltic Sea Advisory Council. Lastly, Essay IV shifts the focus to the energy sector, presenting a meta-analysis of 252 estimates from 21 studies on the impact of wind turbines on property values.

The public defence with Alexandra Allard takes place on October 24 at Örebro University External link, opens in new window..
